Foam Jacking VS. Mudjacking: Which is Better?

Foam Jacking VS. Mudjacking: Which is Better?

Have you noticed cracks in your steps? Maybe your driveway or garage floor is looking a little uneven? If you've noticed these signs, you are likely experiencing concrete settlement. Concrete settlement can cause tripping hazards and drainage problems or leaks in your foundation, so it's essential to have it repaired as soon as possible. Two main methods are used to lift and level sunken concrete slabs—mudajcking and foam jacking (also known as polyurethane concrete lifting). Mudjacking is the more traditional method of lifting and levelling settled concrete. Foam jacking takes the concept of mudjacking but modernizes and improves it. So why is polyurethane concrete lifting a better alternative to mudjacking? We'll tell you!

Polyurethane Foam is Durable.

The best benefit of polyurethane foam is its durability. Polyurethane foam is strong; it can support up to 4,000 pounds per square foot. This makes foam jacking the strongest concrete repair method available! Polyurethane foam is so strong that it is frequently used to lift entire commercial buildings, highways and roadways. Foam jacking is generally a permanent repair option, so you will save money on repair costs in the future. The slurry used in mudjacking can be affected by the same issues that caused the settlement initially and usually will only last a few years. Polyurethane foam can last lifetimes, making foam jacking the superior concrete lifting and levelling method.

Polyurethane Foam is Lightweight.

The concrete slurry used in mudjacking is very heavy. Many concrete levelling companies use a mudjacking mixture that weighs up to 50 times more than polyurethane foam. Because mudjacking slurry is heavy, it can cause the concrete slab to sink again. Polyurethane foam only weighs about 2.5 to 4 pounds per cubic foot, while mudjacking slurry weighs about 100 pounds per cubic foot. Because of the increased weight, it will not stabilize the soil or prevent the concrete slab from settling again. Although polyurethane foam is very lightweight, it is extremely strong once it sets and will not sink over time.

Polyurethane Foam is Water Resistant.

Polyurethane foam is hydrophobic, which means it can be used underwater or in soil prone to wet conditions. Polyurethane foam creates a barrier resistant to water; this not only lifts and levels your concrete but can also help prevent water from leaking into your foundation. Mudjacking will shift over time and doesn't offer water resistance to protect your concrete slab. Water can also seep into the holes made by mudjacking. The concrete and mud mixture can soak up that water and cause it to expand, resulting in additional sinking and settling.

Polyurethane Foam is Environmentally Friendly.

Foam jacking is an environmentally friendly and cost-effective way to lift concrete slabs back to their original position. Our polyurethane foam is made of over 40% recycled materials and doesn't contain harmful materials or toxic chemicals that seep into soil or groundwater. While it is typically a permanent solution to lifting and levelling concrete slabs, it can be removed and recycled if necessary. Mudjacking is also environmentally friendly. But as we stated above, polyurethane foam lasts much longer, so you don't have to be concerned about the slab settling again in the future.
